Eighth Grade
Sports has been quite different than rest of the years at Holy Cross. The year started with cross country. Cross country has always been a less competitive sport for me. The aspect of no teams and just relying on yourself and your endurance is the best part. You race scenic courses with people from all different schools and people I’ve known my whole school career. It really has never been about winning but to improve over each race and each year. Next came flag-football. We have a decent season and only loss a couple of times. Flag-football has always been the funniest sport during school, almost everyone plays and when we’re playing good, we are near unstoppable. During flag-football you can mess up all you want and it’ll still be a blast. After flag-football came basketball. Eighth grade basketball is different from all previous years of basketball. Eighth grade basketball is 10x more competitive and the thought of winning the Ed Kelly Classic is on everyone’s mind. During the regular season we only lost once: SLV had just managed to beat us by a handfull of points. We scared every other team, and won by a landslide in nearly all games. Once the Ed Kelly Classic came up we practiced as much as possible. We had been told that if you one this tournament you would still brag about decades later. During the tournament we climbed all the way to the championship game against our greatest rival: SLV. The night of the game the gym was lite up with energy. All our friends from other schools were there watching. The game was insane and filled with ridiculously good plays. Tragically we lost by less than 10 points. It was heartbreaking and depressing. Weeks passed and we soon forgot about. But to think how close we were to be called the best. Towards the end of the year came volleyball. We didn’t have enough boys to play, so girls volunteered to play on our team. We had an outstanding coach, who herself once played at a very high level of volleyball. We only have lost once during the regular season and will be playing the championship game later…..Will complete once we play championship game
Eighth grade has gone by faster than any year so far. From the middle of August all the way to mid May we have been at it. It has been a year of learning, meeting new people, and getting ready for high school. Everyone has been eccentric all year-round, and the tension building to high school is unbearable. We are all splitting up and going to different schools, in different parts of town, and might not see each other a while, maybe even for a couple years even. My class is just like family though: I’ve known most of them since Kindergarten; that being 9 years. We have all changed over the course of that time. and will continue to. We will move on to big careers and fulfilling our dreams. Good luck to all of us for future years, and for future success.
